On July 16, , the last major battle between Texas forces and the Cherokee tribe along with other tribal bands took place. The Cherokee had first come to Texas shortly after the turn of the century, long before the Texas Revolution, and had settled near the Red River. Much of the time thereafter, their leader was Chief John Bowles, pictured in the image above, also known as Diwal&#;li. There are other variations of his name, but we will refer to him as Chief Bowles. The Chief was thought to have been born around to a Cherokee mother and a Scotch-Irish father. He is said to have had the features of both parents including reddish hair, Cherokee features and freckled skin.
Chief Bowles had negotiated with the Spanish to try and obtain a land grant in but his request was denied, although the Cherokee continued to live in East Texas. The tribe was well known to Sam Houston, whose wives included a Cherokee woman by the name of Talihina (Tiana) Rogers, though the couple was not formally married in an Anglo ceremony. Some accounts state that Tiana was a daughter of Chief Bowles, but to the best of our knowledge, she was not directly related to the Chief and
The Treaty was a promise of a permanent home for the Cherokee Indians of East Texas, and it was a pledge of peace with the Texans. Sam Houston signed for the Texans, and Cheif Bowls signed for the Cherokee Indians. But when Mirabeau Lamar came into the office, the Treaty meant for peace became one of blood. The Cherokee Indians fought to keep the lands promised to them in the Treaty, but they could not overcome Lamar&#;s army, and many Cherokees lost their lives, including Cheif Bowl. [1]
This statue is located on the south side of Main Street in Nacogdoches just east of the square and features Sam Houston () and Cherokee Chief Bowl (). On February 23, , Sam Houston and Chief Bowl signed a treaty granting Cherokees land in East Texas. The Republic of Texas did not honor the treaty and war broke out between the Texans and local tribes. [2]

The Bowles (Duwa'li, or Chief Bowles), was born in North Carolina about He was an auburn haired, blue eyed, half blood Scotch Cherokee.
Settlers from a North Carolina settlement killed Bowles father when Bowles was a young boy and that the vengeful fourteen year old killed his fathers murderers. After that he hated all white people. The Bowl was in the prime of manhood age, thirty two, when he became town Chief of Running Water. One of the five lower towns of Chattanooga Tennessee. This became the rendezvous for many Cherokee chiefs. Bowles being one of them and all of them hating whites.
In June they attacked some emigrants who were on their way down the Tennessee River to the western settlement at Mussel Shoals. The boat was loaded with valuable merchandise. William Scott, owner of the boat, was aboard along with five other men, three women, four children, and twenty slaves. As it passed down the Tennessee, the Cherokee attacked it.
