Regina M. Benjamin, MD, MBA is the 18th Surgeon General of the United States. As America’s Doctor, she provided the public with the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and the health of the nation. Dr. Benjamin also oversaw the operational command of 6, uniformed public health officers who serve in locations around the world to promote, and protect the health of the American People. In addition, Dr. Benjamin served as chair of the National Prevention Council – 17 cabinet-level Federal agencies that developed the road map for the Nation’s health – the National Prevention Strategy.
From her early days as the founder of a rural health clinic in Alabama – which she kept in operation despite damage and destruction inflicted by hurricanes Georges () and Katrina () and a devastating fire () – to her leadership role in the worldwide advancement of preventive health care, Dr. Benjamin has forged a career that has been recognized by a broad spectrum of organizations and publications.

Regina Benjamin Physician and educator Regina Benjamin ( ) is a nationally recognized humanitarian and an expert in rural medicine. She has dedicated her professional life to providing medical care for the community of Bayou La Batre, Mobile County. Benjamin also serves on a number of boards and commissions and has been featured in the national media. She was nominated for the office of U.S. Surgeon General on July 13, , by Pres. Barack Obama and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 29, , becoming the 18th Surgeon General. Regina Marcia Benjamin was born in in Mobile and raised in Daphne by her divorced mother, who worked as a waitress. She graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans and then entered medical school at Atlanta's Morehouse College. I've had numerous obstacles along the way, but I tend not to think of them as obstacles, but as just temporary challenges that I had to get through. There were different things along the way; for example in college, organic chemistry was the first time I really had to apply myself so that I could make a competitive final grade. In medical school it was probably the physiology, and of course, studying for board exams. In practice the challenge has been finding a way to keep my practice doors open economically and still deliver high quality care. How do I make a difference? I hope I make a difference one person at a time. By making a patient feel better, by being able to tell a mother that her baby is going to be okay. Whether her baby is four or forty-four the look on the mother's face is the same. I also hope that I am making a difference in my community by providing a clinic where patients can come and receive health care with dignity. I also hope that I am making a difference in the healthcare system through my involvement in organized medicine.
