I’ve had a lot of help along the way, and I’ll never forget the special people who changed my life and career. I give Popeye and Jan Boultinghouse so much credit. I was just a little country hick college kid from Bloomfield, New Mexico, who didn’t have two nickels to rub together when they took me in. We lost Popeye to cancer in August. Jan asked me to speak at his service, and I couldn’t stop crying. Popeye was like a father and a brother to me all in one. We were family.
When I was graduating from Bloomfield High School in , I was like, “Now what do I do?” I ended up getting a rodeo scholarship to go to Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. I was 17 years old and had no idea where my life was going. I just loved to team rope, and it was starting to catch on in Texas and New Mexico, especially on the jackpotting side. None of the major rodeos had team roping back then.
I hooked up with a group of guys, and we became the kings down there. Dan Fisher took me under his wing, and showed me some things about heading. TeeSquantee Claude Woolman was born December 4, , in Vinita, Oklahoma. TeeSquantee is Cherokee for “boy of the woods”. Tee for short, won his first of three, world team roping titles as PRCA Team Roping Rookie of the Year in He is one of only five in rodeo history to earn his gold buckle in his rookie year.
Tee has won 26 trips to the National Finals Rodeo to team rope and appeared 19 times at the National Finals Steer Roping. That is a total of 45 qualifications. Tee won the prestigious head average at the NFR five times. Tee partnered with Leo “The Lion” Camarillo in and ’82, Bobby Harris in and ’90, and Cory Petska in for the NFR Average Crown. Woolman has a grand total of 28 NFR Go-Round wins.
In the NFSR, Tee is fifth all-time in terms of 42 total National Finals Go-round wins, including 28 at the NFR and 14 at the NFSR. Q: What stands out 41 years later when you think back on that historic rookie year heading for Leo Camarillo as the new kid on the block?
A: Winning the world championship. Bottom line, my goal was to rope with Leo and win the world championship my first year. It was a blur. We went to rodeos, and only turned out two steers. There were no rodeo limits, and team roping wasn’t a standard event at every rodeo, either. It was trains, planes and automobiles roping with Leo.
Q: Super Looper Roy Cooper helped hook you up with The Lion, right?
A: Yes. It all started when I went to Leo, Jerold and Reg’s roping school in Chickasha, Oklahoma, when I was Leo told me then that if I ever wanted to rodeo to give him a call. Roy and I were going to school in Durant, and Roy was driving back and forth from Durant to Oklahoma City roping at the NFR. His notorious horseshoe mustache was more of a pencil ’stache in , when Tee Woolman was a student at Southeastern Oklahoma State.
One night he ventured up to the City to watch a perf of the NFR. That’s where the lanky Cherokee/Irish cowboy told Roy Cooper he was thinking of quitting school and turning pro. Roy introduced him to Leo Camarillo.
Leo had already been inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame when year-old Tee – a soon-to-be PRCA rookie – asked him for a chance.
“He told me he’d give it a whirl,” recalls Tee. “He didn’t know what he was getting, for sure.”
Armed with a really good yellow horse called “Doc” that he’d bought from Gary Jacobs, Tee entered the fourth-ever BFI and the last at the hallowed Stampede Grounds in Chowchilla, California, over the foot score, with Leo. Otherwise, the format was the same as today.
The kid and the Hall-of-Famer were high callback. Was Tee nervous for that sixth steer?
“I was pretty full of myself back then, so I wasn’t too nervous about anything,” he says of the run that paid the team $10, cash and a trophy two-horse trailer. “They only gave one trailer,” he adds. “I got it.”
