Mykhailo Sergijovych Hrushevsky (–) is an outstanding Ukrainian historian, specialist in literature, writer, publicist, public man, and statesman.
Mykhailo Hrushevski possessed inherited love to his country – Ukraine, all his acts, both great and small, being elucidated by his profound patriotic feelings. His fate, his destinationwere to become a custodian of the Ukraine’s national dignity, to assure for each Ukrainian human the right to be proud of being Ukrainian.
That is why all his projects – beginning from his fundamental “History of Ukraine-Rus”, Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society (actual Ukrainian Academy of Sciences), and such a unique phenomenon as Hrushevski’s scientific school, the first Ukrainian Parliament – so-called Ukrainian Central Rada (Central Legislative Council) – up to the smallest published note obeyed to the single objective: they were to “promote the national renaissance of Ukraine”. Historian, educator, and author Mykola Kostomarov was a leading figure in the Ukrainian national awakening of the nineteenth century, and played an important role in the cultural life of Russia as well. As an ethnographer, he sought to uncover the 'mysterious soul? of the Ukrainian people, and his poetry contributed to the development of a Ukrainian literary language. An outspoken proponent of social and national emancipation, he was imprisoned and exiled for his role in the Cyril-Methodian Brotherhood, which worked towards a Ukrainian national renaissance and a pan-Slavic federalism. In Russia, he led the 'populist? school, which shifted the focus of history away from the realm of tsars and princes, and argued the centrality of 'the people? to their own story.
This first English-language biography of Kostomarov - and first large-scale study of the subject in any language - offers a compelling account of his original and controversial scholarship, and his role in the cultural politics of his day. Einer der Zentralgedanken Hruševs’kyjs kreiste um den Begriff der "dynamischen Kraft der Entwicklung" als Ursache des geschichtlichen Fortschritts. Jedes Volk, jedes Wesen besitze ein Recht auf Entfaltung seiner Entwicklungspotentiale, die auf Dauer nicht aufgehalten oder rückgängig gemacht werden könnten. Grundlage des Fortschritts sei "die Heiligkeit der Arbeit". Als Ziel dieser Entwicklung sah er die "klassenlose Gesellschaft", in der Gleichheit und Brüderlichkeit herrschen würden, wo die Menschenrechte, das Recht auf Grund und Boden und auf vollen Arbeitsertrag gesichert sind. Der Klassenstaat müsse dann verschwinden und den Platz räumen für eine Weltföderation der autonomen Gesellschaften. Gleichzeitig lehnte Hruševs’kyj die marxistische Klassenunterteilung ab, weil er sich gegen jede "künstliche" Atomisierung des geknechteten Volkes wandte. Hruševs’kyj war überzeugt, daß die Zwangsstaaten mechanische Gebilde ohne Dauer und Zukunft darstellten und von den freien, föderativen Gemeinden abgelöst werden würden. Hlafira Zakharivna, the mother of the future scholar, was born and raised in Sestrynivka. At the age of seventeen, she married Serhii Hrushevsky, a year-old professor of the Kyiv Theological Seminary. The village was the life-long home of Hlafira's father, a local priest named Zakharii Opokov, who gave his blessing to his beloved grandson, Mykhailo, ahead of his studies at the University of Kyiv.
