Alicia silverstone in the 90s

Alicia Silverstone was born on October 4, in San Francisco, California, the youngest of three children. She is the daughter of Didi (Radford), a former flight attendant, and Monty Silverstone, a real estate investor. Her English-born father is from a Jewish family, while her Scottish-born mother converted to Judaism. Alicia's career began at the tender age of six, when her father took some photos of his young daughter, which eventually led to her getting several television commercials. After a guest spot on The Wonder Years () as a literal "dream girl", she moved on to movies. She landed a role in The Crush (), a sort of Fatal Attraction () for teenagers in which she portrayed a disturbed young girl obsessed with an older man. The nasty little role did not impress the critical establishment but it wowed its target audience: teenagers. In fact, the role won her the MTV Movie Award for "Best Villain" and "Breakthrough Performance". It is interesting to note that during the filming of the movie, Alicia became an emancipated minor in order to get around child labor laws which would have interfered with her working hours. Her Remarkable Rise to Fame in the 90s

Even as a young girl growing up in San Francisco, Alicia Silverstone dreamed of becoming an actress. She started modeling and appearing in commercials at just six years old, showing early promise of the star she would become.

Silverstone got her first big break in at age 16 playing the lead in The Crush opposite Cary Elwes. Her performance as the manipulative teen who becomes obsessed with a man twice her age earned praise from critics.

But it was playing the privileged, boy-crazy Cher Horowitz in ‘s Clueless that made Sil

Admit it: You spent the '90s lacing up your Dr. Martens and expertly inserting butterfly clips into your hair.

But it's OK -- Alicia Silverstone was the coolest person on the planet and she did, too. Whether you hopped on the Silverstone train circa her appearance in Aerosmith's music video for "Crazy" in or after her turn as Cher in 's "Clueless," the actress' style was pretty emblematic of what was going on across the country. Or, at the very least, in our own wardrobes.

In honor of Silvertone's 37th birthday today (Oct. 4), we're taking a fond walk down memory lane and recalling the style tips we picked up from her back in the '90s.

We swore by our cotton floral print dresses. (OK, sometimes they were rompers.)

We thought double denim was unquestionably cool.

We dabbled in the whole '90s minimalism thing.

We couldn't survive without our flannels

and our sheer printed tops. (Hey, these things come back in style.)

We loved our teeny-tiny sunglasses.

We considered chokers must-have accessories.

We weren't afraid to experiment with flat twist hairstyles

or over-the-top updos held in place

Who could forget Alicia Silverstone? As '90s kids surely remember, Silverstone was the it girl in the middle of the decade, appearing in heavy rotation on MTV, breaking out in the iconic film Clueless, and seemingly gracing the cover of every magazine. The blonde-haired actress took the world by storm, inspiring legions of fans to don yellow plaid outfits and knee-high socks while proclaiming the motto of a generation: As if!

Then, just as quickly as Silverstone catapulted into mega celebrity, she disappeared from the spotlight. Overwhelmed by the glitter and glitz of Hollywood — as well as the cruelty of the paparazzi — Silverstone retreated from the public eye in favor of a simpler life. You really can't blame her, especially given how young she was when she became famous.

But that doesn't mean that Silverstone stopped acting altogether or succumbed to the pressures of sudden fame. Curious to know what ever happened to her? Read on to find out!
