Howard Carter is surely the most famous archaeologist in the world, following his discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and its ‘wonderful things’ in The small market town of Swaffham in Norfolk is the birthplace of both his parents, the place he grew up in, and first learnt about Egyptology.
Howard Carter (HC) was born in Kensington, London on 9 May , the youngest son of Samuel John Carter, and Martha Joyce Carter (née Sands). His father was an artist who worked for the Illustrated London News, and many of his 11 children inherited his artistic flair, with at least 3 working as artists. Despite being born in Kensington (and dying there, in , aged 64), most of Howard’s childhood was spent in Swaffham. Because of ill health, he was probably educated at home. The family lived with his paternal grandfather, a gamekeeper. In Norfolk, his father found work painting horse and pet portraits for the gentry, and Howard (HC) would accompany him. Howard Carter first went to Egypt as a young artist hired to sketch artifacts. He went on to become an important archaeologist and the lead excavator of the tomb of King Tutankhamun. He found the Egyptian pharaoh’s sarcophagus in February after years of searching and more than three months of excavation. Early Life

The th anniversary of Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb means fascination with the find endures. Inspiration is well and good, but starting the novel was a challenge; Paul tried no less than seven different openings: “The first draft began with Eve at the age of eight greeting Carter when he arrived at Highclere Castle with an artifact for her father’s collection, and it ran chronologically. That was too slow, and there was no narrative hook. Eventually I switched into dual timeline and realized I felt much more comfortable that way.”
