रघुनाथ माशेलकर: 'विचारवंत' वैज्ञानिकाचा जीवन प्रवास

ग्रीक विचारवंत प्लेटोनं 'फिलॉसॉफर किंग' किंवा विचारवंत राजाची संकल्पना मांडली होती. राजानं फक्त शासक असून चालणार नाही तर त्यानं विचारशील असावं, ज्ञान ग्रहण करण्याची त्याला आवड असावी असं प्लेटोनं म्हटलं होतं.
डॉ. रघुनाथ माशेलकर यांची ओळख वैज्ञानिक अशी आहेच पण ते केवळ वैज्ञानिकच नाही तर एक विचारवंत देखील आहेत. गांधींजींवर आधारित 'टाइमलेस इंस्पिरेटर' हे पुस्तक संपादित करणाऱ्या माशेलकरांनी सतत तरुणांना प्रेरणा देण्याचं काम केलं आहे. त्यामुळं ते देखील एक 'टाइमलेस इंस्पिरेटर' आहेत यात शंका नाही.
रघुनाथ माशेलकरांनी आज आपल्या वयाच्या पंचाहत्तरीमध्ये पदार्पण केलं आहे. गेली पाच दशकं त्यांनी आपलं आयुष्य विज्ञान आणि समाजाच्या सेवेसाठी समर्पित केलं आहे. त्यांच्या वाढदिवसाचं औचित्य साधून बीबीसी मराठीनं त्यांच्याशी संवाद साधला. त्यांचं बालपण, गांधींजींच्या विचारांशी असलेली जवळीक आणि संशोधन क्षेत्रातील भारताची स्थिती अशा अनेक विषयांवर त्यांनी त्यांचे विचार मांडले.
बालपण
1 जानेवारी रोजी गोव्यातल्या माशेल या गावात रघुनाथ माशेलकरांचा जन्म झाला. त्यांना सर्व जण लाडानं रमेश
१९४३ साली जन्मलेल्या रघुनाथ अनंत माशेलकर यांनी यथावकाश मुंबईच्या इन्स्टिट्यूट ऑफ केमिकल टेक्नॉलॉजीमधून रसायन अभियंता म्हणून आपले शिक्षण पूर्ण केले. नंतर त्यांनी मुंबई विद्यापीठातून पीएच.डी. ही केली. त्यानंतर ते इंग्लंडच्या सालफोर्ड विद्यापीठात गेले व तेथे त्यांनी पॉलिमर इंजिनिअरिंगमध्ये संशोधन केले. तेथून परत आल्यावर ते पुण्याच्या नॅशनल केमिकल लॅबोरेटरीमध्ये काम करू लागले. सहा वर्षे ते या लॅबोरेटरीचे संचालक होते. नंतर ते काउन्सिल ऑफ सायंटिफिक अँड रिसर्च इंडस्ट्रियल (CSIR) या संस्थेचे महासंचालक झाले.
डॉ. माशेलकरांनी, &#;द्रवांवर दाब दिला असता त्यांच्या प्रवाहीपणात होणारे बदल&#; याविषयी संशोधन केले. हे फुगणाऱ्या आणि आक्रसणाऱ्या बहुवारीकांच्या (पॉलिमर्स) उष्मागतिकी आणि वहन पद्धतीबद्दलचे संशोधन आहे. जेव्हा एखादा पदार्थ विद्रावकात विरघळतो तेव्हा त्या द्रावणाचे तापमान, दाब, त्यातील क्षारांचे प्रमाण वेगवेगळ्या परिस्थितीत बदलू शकतात. काही विशिष्ट पदार्थांचे प्रवाहितेच्या संबंधीचे काही आगळेवेगळे गुणधर्म असतात, जे औद्योगिक क्षेत्रात महत्त्वाचे ठरतात. काही द्रावणावरील दाब जसा वाढतो तसतशी त्याची वाहकता किंवा प्रवाहीपणा वाढत जातो. रंगारी जेव्हा रंगामध्ये ब्रश बुडवतो तेव्हा डब्यातील रंग घट्ट असतो. पण जेव्हा रंगारी भिंतीवर ब्रश दाबून रंग देतो तेव्हा तो रंग तेवढ्या क्षणी काहीसा पातळ होतो. येथे

ML: We gather that you had a difficult childhood. Can you take us through your formative years?
Mashelkar: I was born in a place called Mashel in Goa. My father died when I was six and my mother came to Mumbai in search of a livelihood. She was an illiterate woman and I was the only child. She did practically menial work or stitched clothes to bring me up. It was a tough childhood. Getting two meals a day was a problem. I call my mother the greatest food technologist. She had mastered the art of cooking one meal in a way that I did not feel hungry at night.
I went to a municipal school (Upper Khetwadi Primary School) and I remember, the school itself was so poor that they could not afford to buy question papers. A test was held every Saturday and we had to buy the question papers ourselves. One day, I remember, we did not have three paise that were needed to buy them. When I had to go from primary to secondary standard, we needed Rs 21 as the admission fees.
