The most famous, rare, desirable and fast cars of the last years of the Sixties are the few, famous, lightweight COPO Chevrolets delivered with the aluminum block ZL-1 engine. They are the subject of continuing search, restoration and probably more legends, tall tales and tributes than anything else in the history of American Muscle. The premier examples of these machines are the sixty-nine COPO ZL-1 powered Camaros built, appropriately enough, in
COPO stands for Central Office Production Order, a system developed within General Motors to accommodate short run production requests for vehicles with features not offered within the Regular Production Options available for retail sale. Most COPO vehicles were nothing special. In fact, they were usually less than ordinary vehicles like taxicabs, police cars, trucks and cars for utility fleets. Stuff that got used to death and then was discarded.

If you're a baseball fan and a car nut, you might want to book your tickets for next month's Mecum Monterey Auction: superstar slugger Reggie Jackson is sending not one, not two, but 15 cars to the block.
In a press release, the folks at Mecum highlight Jackson's prized ZL1 Chevrolet Camaro -- one of only 69 made, and one of just five or six with the original engine -- and indeed, it's an awesome ride. Working through the COPO process at Chevrolet (Central Office Production Order), a racing-oriented Chevy dealer ordered 50 specially equipped Camaro’s. Core to these automobiles was a ZL1 light-weight cubic inch V8 that was suitable for drag racing. This example is one of those cars and it was previously owned by baseball great Reggie Jackson. Completely restored, it’s about to make an appearance at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sources indicate that between 50 and 69 of these cars were produced under special order.
