A Legacy of a Princess
Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop was a woman of intelligence, compassion and foresight who understood that her kuleana as a Hawaiian ali‘i was to serve her people.
Born in December 19, to high chiefs Abner Pākī and Laura Kōnia Pākī, Pauahi was the great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I.
As the last royal descendant of the Kamehameha line, Pauahi inherited thousands of acres of land, much of it from the estate of her cousin Princess Ruth Ke‘elikōlani. Her inheritance, about nine percent of the island chain’s total acreage, made Pauahi the largest landholder in the kingdom.
When Pauahi was born, the Native Hawaiian population numbered about , When she wrote her will in , only 44, Hawaiians remained. Pauahi witnessed the rapid decline of the Hawaiian population. With that decline came a loss of Hawaiian language, culture and traditions. She believed education would offer her people hope and a future, so she left her estate — about nine percent of the total acreage of the Hawaiian kingdom — to found Kamehameha Schools.

Pauahi was born on December 19, , the daughter of Abner Kaʻehu Paki and Kanaholo Konia; she is great-granddaughter of King Kamehameha.
She was born in the house known as ʻAikupika (Egypt,) a native-style house, not large, with a grass-roof. (It was situated just mauka of what is now known as the corner of Bishop and King Streets in the heart of the downtown area.)
Inoa (a name) was a ritual of power. Hawaiians believed that every name had mana, a force of its own, that could influence and shape the character, personality and even destiny of the bearer. A good name could bring good fortune while a bad inoa could bring a person bad luck. (Kanahele)
Paki and Konia gave her the name Pauahi (‘the fire is out.’) It was the name of Konia’s half-sister, the child’s aunt and mother of Ruth Keʻelikolani. The original Pauahi was nearly burned to death as a child through an accidental explosion of gunpowder; to commemorate her lucky escape, she was given the name: pau or finished and ahi or fire. Pauahi was hanai (adopted) to her aunt, Kinaʻu (the eldest daughter of Kamehameha, who later served as Kuhina Nui as Kaʻahumanu II, a position similar to a Prime Minister.)

The ‘Ahahui was originally chartered on August 8, by Princess Victoria Kamāmalu, Chiefess Lydia Kamaka‘eha Dominis, crowned Queen Lili‘uokalani in , and Chiefess Bernice Pauahi, who later became Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. The society was named “Ka‘ahumanu Society” after Princess Victoria’s aunt, Ka‘ahumanu, Kūhina Nui of the Hawaiian Kingdom under Kamehameha the Great.
Very concerned about the ill health and grim social conditions facing their native Hawaiians, these three influential women believed an organization for Hawaiian women was needed to ease suffering and offer help. Unfortunately the group disbanded two years later in the fall of after the unexpected passing of the young Princess Kamāmalu.
Thirty nine years later, on June 14, , a group of eleven women led by Lucy Kaheiheimālie Peabody resurrected and re-chartered the Ahahui at Kawaiaha‘o Church.

In my opinion, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop is a Hawaiian woman who is trustworthy, courageous, and determined. She is trustworthy because of all the deeds that she did for the Hawaiian people. She is a courageous woman because of her will to do what was in her heart. And, she is determined because during her times of struggle, she never once gave up.
On December 19th, in Honolulu, Hawai’i, Laura Kanaholo Konia and Abner Ka’ehu Paki conceived a daughter, who they named Bernice Pauahi Paki. Their daughter was born into a family with royal blood, which made her a princess. Her great-grandfather was Kamehameha I, who in united all of the Hawaiian Islands under his ruling. But she was raised by a Prime Minster named Kina’u. Because of her nobility, she attended the Chief’s Children School, where she was taught by American missionaries.
