Hello again, I apologise for my long absence, I have been very busy at home and abroad. However, in this time period I have accumulated a lot of new content for this blog. I am going to begin by reviewing this book which I read all the way back in July.
This book provided a great insight into the bizarre world of Elizabethan theatre. Ackroyd writes with great enthusiasm about the works of Shakespeare, thus infusing this book with copious praise for England's greatest bard. The narrative traces Shakespeare's journey from a relatively prosperous upbringing in Stratford-upon-Avon, to London and immortality in literature. Ackroyd's beautiful language proves him worthy to be a biographer of the great poet. The entire book is written in magnificent prose containing many eloquent phrases and descriptions, which makes reading such a scholarly work pleasurable.

There is much that is not known about Shakespeare, a circumstance that always poses difficulties for a biographer, and one which often tempts the biographer to overreach the spare facts that are known with surmises and interpretations that become merged with known facts leaving a distorted, confused impression. Peter Ackroyd avoids this pitfall by masterfully recreating Shakespeare the person through the context of the time and circumstances in which he lived. The time and circumstances of Shakespeare&#;s life can be discerned with much more clarity and much more fullness than Shakespeare himself, but that context illuminates the person that Shakespeare must have been, and together with the writings that he left and other documents that pertain to his life, a remarkably clear and convincing portrait of Shakespeare the person emerges. When he emerged from the womb into the world of time, with the assistance of a midwife, an infant of the sixteenth century was washed and then "swaddled" by being wrapped tightly in soft cloth. Then he was carried downstairs in order to be presented to the father. After this ritual greeting, he was taken back to the birth-chamber, still warm and dark, where he was laid beside the mother. She was meant to "draw to her all the diseases from the child," before her infant was put in a cradle. A small portion of butter and honey was usually placed in the baby's mouth. It was the custom in Warwickshire to give the suckling child hare's brains reduced to jelly.
