Digby Morton () was born in Dublin in He studied art and architecture at the Metropolitan School of Art and Architecture before moving to London in Here he worked as a sketch artist for Jay’s fashion store of Oxford Street before founding the tailoring firm of Lachasse in the same year. After five years at Lachasse, he established his own house. He was well-known for his tailoring and particularly for suits and coats. He used traditional fabrics such as tweed and Aran knits, combining them with more feminine tailoring and silk blouses to produce flattering, elegant pieces.
During WW2 Morton and several other British couturiers formed the Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers and were responsible for designing collections of Utility garments for women across the country. It was a canny piece of propaganda to soften the blow of severe rationing. The restrictions on the use of fabric required ingenuity and these designers achieved this very successfully.
Morton was also invited to design uniforms for the Women’s Voluntary Service during the war.

Phyllis Digby Morton was a pioneer – a ground-breaking female journalist in an era when Fleet Street was dominated by men. Appointed as editor of a new women’s magazine in when she was only 29, she launched an innovative advice column dealing with hitherto taboo topics. She became one of the best-known fashion and beauty writers of the day, and her marriage to the society couturier Henry Digby Morton (known as Digby) confirmed her celebrity status. Yet today her name is largely forgotten.
Phyllis was born in the first year of the 20th century, the youngest of six children, to a middle-class literary family in Brixton, South London. Digby Morton, who was born in Dublin in , was a couturier who helped to put Britain on the fashion map. He reinvented the tweed suit, which was previously a frumpy staple of country life, into something chic and even avant-garde, revitalising the British wool industry as he did so. Because of him, the press started to say “Paris makes the news, but London should make the clothes”.
His suits, and the blouses which went with them, were practical, feminine, and fashionable. He was also noted for his skilled use of colour, his popularising of ready-to-wear clothes and for his work during World War Two in promoting British fashion.
