EDWARD JEFFREY IRVING ARDIZZONE 

C.B.E., R.A., R.D.I., F.S.I.A., Hon A.R.C.A.

October 16, born in Haiphong, Province of Tonkin, Cochine-Française (French Indo-China). His father, though of Italian parentage, was born in Algeria and therefore a French national.

Arrives in England with his two sisters Elizabeth (Betty) and Lauretta (Tetta).

The three elder children brought up largely by their maternal grandmother in Suffolk whilst their parents were on foreign service.

Attends Clayesmore School.

Early Life and Influences

Edward Ardizzone was born in Haiphong, French Indochina (now Vietnam), in His father was of Italian descent, while his mother was English. After his mother's return to England in , Ardizzone spent his formative years in Suffolk, nurtured by his grandmother and inspired by his art teacher's encouragement.

Artistic Career

Ardizzone's talent as an illustrator flourished early on. His first published work, "The Mediterranean: An Anthology," appeared in , showcasing his masterful craftsmanship in creating elaborate title pages. In , he illustrated the first book in the beloved "Little Tim" series, which chronicled the adventures of a courageous young sailor.

Wartime Experiences

Book illustrator, lithographer, watercolourist and writer for children. Born in Haiphong, Indo-China, Ardizzone – whose work was sometimes signed DIZ or E A – studied art under Bernard Meninsky and F J Porter at evening classes at Westminster School of Art in –1. After working as a clerk, he decided in to pursue art full-time; five years later he had his first one-man show at the Leger Galleries. He was an official war artist during World War II, working widely in Europe and North Africa, and his illustrated war diaries are notable records. After the war he established a strong following as a book illustrator, titles ranging from Walter de la Mare’s Peacock Pie and John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress to H E Bates’ Uncle Silas stories and Maurice Gorham’s Back to the Local.

Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone was born in Haiphong in the province of Tonkin (now North Korea) on 10 October , eldest of five children of Frenchman, Auguste Ardizzone (16 April March ) Bon�, Algeria and of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Co., and his wife Margaret n�e Irving (), second daughter of Edward Irving, Auditor General of the Straits Settlements, who married at the Catholic Church of Our Lady and St Joseph's, Hanwell, Middlesex on 29 July In the family returned to England, firstly to London and then coming to East Bergholt, Suffolk.
