For 20 years, The Jupiter Island Arts Council has worked hard to bring arts & culture to the forefront of our community. It was founded by a group of culturally minded residents of Jupiter Island in Martin County, Florida. In , The Arts Council opened the doors to the new Cornelia T. and Glenn W. Bailey Art Gallery through a generous grant from the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation.
Today, The Arts Council and The Bailey Gallery are (c)(3) dedicated to providing exceptional educational opportunities and stunning arts programming to everyone, regardless of age, background, or other factors.
Bailey Art Gallery, opened In by the Jupiter Island Arts Council Inc., advocates for community arts and ensures everyone has access to high-quality art and learning, regardless of age, background, skills, or other factors. Funded by a generous grant from the Cornelia T. P/Arts Program Information
P/Arts stands for Philanthropic Arts and is our Foundation’s own initiative launched in to help catalyze non-profit, tax-exempt public charities, accredited schools and universities, and government or public agencies. We want to help implement or enhance educational programs utilizing the arts in daily curricula for early childhood education programs as well as K students.
The P/Arts Program Was Created To Encourage Partnerships Within The Philanthropic Arts And Education Communities
Organizations applying for P/Arts funding must be accredited (c)(3) organizations that are using performing and/or visual arts education to help:

Johnson Hammock is in the southern area of the Hog Hammock (Hogg Hummuck) Community on Sapelo Island. It was founded by Isaac and Jane Johnson who moved to the island after Emanicipation.

Cornelia Bailey is one of a last generation of African-Americans born, raised, and schooled on Sapelo Island, GA. For generations, this Geechee community, descendents of Africans enslaved on the Sea Islands, lived isolated from the mainland. Now, just 69 black residents live on Sapelo. Children attend school on the mainland, and most move off the island as soon as they are old enough to find work.
Cornelia describes growing up on Sapelo as a struggle in many ways. Her father made nets and fox traps, and provided for his family with wild fish and game - including, sometimes, alligator. Men plowed the fields with oxen and mules, and Cornelia says she can still cook better on a wood stove than an electric one.
As a child, Cornelia visited churches on the mainland and wondered why worship there was slightly different from her Baptist church on Sapelo. It wasn't until she read The Autobiography of Malcolm X that she became aware that many religious practices on Sapelo had Muslim origins. Cornelia was the descendent of a Muslim slave named Bilai Mohamed who was enslaved on Sapelo in Bilali could read and write Arabic, wore a fez, and was buried with a copy of the Quran.
