Nicholas of Tolentine () was a simple priest and Augustinian friar who touched the lives of many.
His sprit of prayer, penance, austerity of life and devotion to the Holy Souls were notable. His preaching brought many to Christ.
Nicholas Gurutti was born in in Sant'Angelo, Pontano, Macerata, Italy. His family was rather poor.
He joined the Augustinian Order while a young man, after hearing the inspired preaching of Reginaldo da Monterubbiano, Prior (local superior) of the Augustinian monastery in Sant'Angelo.
As a priest and religious, he was full of charity towards his brother Augustinians as well as towards the people to whom he ministered. He visited the sick and cared for the needy. He was a noted preacher of the Gospel. He gave special attention to those who had fallen away from the Church. People considered him a miracle worker.
He often fasted and performed other works of penance. He spent long hours in prayer.
The story is told that, one day, having fasted for a long time, Nicholas was physically weak. While at prayer, Jesus told him to eat some bread marked with a cross and soaked in water in order to regain his strength.
St. Nicholas of Tolentino
This Nicholas was born in answer to his mother's prayers. Childless and in middle age, she had made a pilgrimage with her husband to the shrine of St. Nicholas of Bari to ask for a son whom she promised to dedicate to God's service. When her wish was granted, she named the boy Nicholas and he soon gave unusual signs of saintliness. Already at seven he would hide away in a nearby cave and pray there like the hermits whom he had observed in the mountains. As soon as he was old enough he was received into the Order of Augustinian friars. On account of his kind and gentle manner his superiors entrusted him with the daily feeding of the poor at the monastery gates, but at times he was so free with the friary's provisions that the procurator begged the superior to check his generosity. He was ordained in and said his first Mass with exceptional fervor; thereafter, whenever he celebrated the holy Mystery he seemed aglow with the fire of his love. His preaching, instructions and work in the confessional brought about numerous conversions, and his many miracles were responsible for more, yet he was careful not to take any credit for these miracles. El sobrenombre Tolentino le vino de la ciudad italiana donde trabajó y murió.
Sus papás después de muchos años de matrimonio no tenían hijos, y para conseguir del cielo la gracia de que les llegara algún heredero, hicieron una peregrinación al santuario de San Nicolás de Bari. Al año siguiente nació este niño y en agradecimiento al santo que les había conseguido el regalo del cielo, le pusieron por nombre Nicolás. Ya desde muy pequeño le gustaba alejarse del pueblo e irse a una cueva a orar. Cuando ya era joven, un día entró a un templo y allí estaba predicado un famoso fraile agustino, el Padre Reginaldo, el cual repetía aquellas palabras de San Juan: "No amen demasiado el mundo ni las cosas del mundo. Todo lo que es del mundo pasará". Estas palabras lo conmovieron y se propuso hacerse religioso. Pidió ser admitido como agustino, y bajo la dirección del Padre Reginaldo hizo su noviciado en esa comunidad.

Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, also known as Niccolò da Tolentino, Nicola da Tolentino, and Nicolás de Tolentino, is a beloved Catholic saint who is revered as the patron of Holy Souls. He was born in in the town of Sant'Angelo, in the March of Ancona, Italy, to his middle-aged parents, Compagnonus de Guarutti and Amata de Guidiani. The couple had been previously childless until they made a prayerful visit to a shrine of Saint Nicholas of Myra in Bari, Italy. In gratitude for the answered prayers, they named their son Nicholas. At the age of 18, Nicholas entered the religious life and became an Augustinian friar. He studied under Blessed Angelus de Scarpetti and was ordained a priest at the age of He served as a canon at Saint Saviour's and received visions of angels reciting the phrase "to Tolentino." Taking this as a divine sign, he decided to move to the city of Tolentino in , where he spent the rest of his life. One of Nicholas' notable contributions was his role as a peacemaker in a city torn apart by civil war. He preached daily and was renowned as a wonder-worker and healer.
