Barbadian artist Ras Ishi Butcher (b. ) often reflects concern regarding issues of race, identity, and social injustices in his paintings. In a style that he has labeled as "Fauvist," (in reference to Matisse and Derain’s movement where color theory takes central stage) Butcher uses and manipulates different materials in his works, giving them a style that transitions between painting and craft.
At the beginning of his career, Butcher worked in Barbados' sugar-cane fields for two years to pay for his art studies, a landscape that was to serve as inspiration for several of his paintings. Using almost exclusively a black-and-white color palette and with a composition marked by two main sections, "A New Day" is a geometric and symbolic interpretation of the hard life in Barbadian plantations, both during the colonial period and the present, and the hope that the new day will bring a better future. The red star shining brightly, as well as the use of the same color and texture for both the main character and the sky, strengthens the idea of overcoming current dominance structures.

Going to Cuba is still a big adventure. As one friend told me: Wait till you see the plane – it so old, it have curtains over the windows.
