Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho, or simply Oscar Niemeyer, (December 15, – December 5, ) was one of the greatest architects in Brazil's history, and one of the greats of the global modernist movement. After his death in , Niemeyer left the world more than five hundred works scattered throughout the Americas, Africa, and Europe.

Niemeyer attended the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro in , graduating in He began working with the influential Brazilian architect and urban planner Lúcio Costa in , a professional partnership that would last decades and result in some of the most important works in the history of modern architecture.

In , Niemeyer joined a team of Le Corbusier, Lúcio Costa, Affonso Eduardo Reidy, Carlos Leon, Jorge Moreira and Ernani Vasconcellos to design the headquarters of the Ministry of Education and Health, located in the center of Rio de Janeiro. Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida de Niemeyer Soares (b. Rio de Janeiro, ) is Brazil’s most celebrated architect, known internationally for his designs and writings. His leftist politics support an architectural philosophy with a strong moral agenda dedicated to social change. Many of Niemeyer’s commissions have been for progressive clients seeking to use architecture as a transformative medium.

At the time of Niemeyer´s internship at the firm of Lucio Costa, Le Corbusier was already world famous for his innovative design, most notably his 5 pillars of modern architecture. He was invited to Brazil by Lucio Costa and his team to help and oversee the project of the Ministry of Education and Health Building, more commonly referred to as Gustavo Capanema Palace. During this work, Niemeyer was successful in convincing Le Corbusier to include a Portuguese style mural below the pillars better reflects the local traditions and ornamentic of Brazilian culture than the rest of the structure.

The encounter with Le Corbusier led Niemeyer to pursue his own regional style of modernism, not the universal, one size fits all approach developed and practiced by Le Corbusier.

His first house, which Oscar Niemeyer designed for himself in in Lagoa reflects the strong influence the Masterpiece of Le Corbusier: Villa Savoye had on Niemeyer. Oscar Niemeyer was born on 15th Dec in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. He was Portuguese and at the age of 21, he left his school and got married to Annita Blado, an Italian girl. Also, he graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Rio De Janeiro with BA in architecture.

About The Architect

After graduation, He worked in his father&#;s typography house. Then he joined the architecture studio of Lucio Costa, where he was a draftsman.  Costa got the opportunity to design the headquarters of the Ministry of Education and Health in Rio De Janeiro. Also, Costa insisted Le Corbusier work with him. Initially, Oscar was not part of the team. But he made a humble request to Costa, to join the team. After that Oscar became the part of working team. There he met Le Corbusier for the first time.

During this project, He worked closely with Le Corbusier. The style of Le Corbusier made a long-lasting impression on Oscar. Also, this change of working as well as the thinking style of Oscar impressed Costa. So he allowed him to take the lead for the projects at his firm. From there his career as an architect began.
