Isamu Noguchi () was an American artist who bridged the gap between East and West, combining elements of Japanese tradition with modern Western aesthetics. His work spanned various disciplines, including sculpture, furniture design, and landscape architecture.
Early Life and Influences
Noguchi was born in Los Angeles to Japanese parents. He received his early education in Japan and later moved to New York City in , where he studied at the Leonardo da Vinci and Eastside Art Schools, as well as Columbia University. In , he traveled to Paris and worked as an assistant in the studio of Constantin Brancusi. There, he was influenced by the works of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró.

Summary of Isamu Noguchi
Isamu Noguchi, a major American and Japanese sculptor and designer, spent over six decades creating abstract works - largely in stone - based on both organic and geometric forms. Greatly inspired by traditional Japanese art, as well as by the biomorphic style of some Surrealist art, Noguchi became internationally known both for his artwork and his publicly accessible furniture and architecture. His ultimate objective, to create and enhance public spaces through sculpture, provided his career with a distinct direction and established him as a critical figure in the worlds of post-war art, architecture and design.
Accomplishments
- The overarching concept informing Noguchi's work was his passionate, career-long desire to create art the public could use in a social space. He realized this goal in myriad ways: mass produced furniture and lamps; theatrical set designs; public projects such as gardens, playgrounds and fountains; and sculptural manipulations of the natural landscape.

Isamu Noguchi (), American sculptor and designer, was one of the few legitimate heirs to the sculptural tradition begun by Brancusi. His sculptures, fountains and gardens are focal points in many cities in the United States and worldwide.
Isamu Noguchi was born on November 17, , in Los Angeles, California. His father was a Japanese poet and authority on art, his mother an American writer. In he moved with his family to Japan, where his father married a Japanese woman, and Noguchi remained with his mother until he was 14 years old. In , his mother sent him back to the United States to finish his education. He became an apprentice to Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, who told Noguchi he was not talented enough to be a sculptor.
