H.H. Holmes: The True Story of the White City Devil by Adam Selzer is a Skyhorse Publishing publication.

Dubbed the “First American Serial Killer’, H.H. Holmes has garnered a great deal of attention in the past, and has been the subject of documentaries and bestselling books. But, recently, the interest in Holmes has spiked.

Just this afternoon, I saw a post on social media claiming a letter had been found in a family Bible, allegedly written by Holmes, expressing remorse for his heinous crimes.

There were also recent headlines involving the suspicion that Holmes faked his own execution, prompting an exhumation of his body.

In the not so distant future, Holmes will be the subject a feature film, starring Academy award winner, Leonardo DiCaprio.

So, with the flurry of rumors and eye catching headlines keeping the notorious serial killer in the public eye, your interest in Holmes might be piqued. If you are looking for a good book that will detail the life of one of the most prolific con men in history, as well as the man who carries the debatable moniker of being America’s first serial killer, this boo

The Strange Case Of Dr. H.H. Holmes

The Strange Case of Dr. HH Holmes by John Borowski

Herman Webster Mudgett, infamous under his pseudonym of Dr. HH Holmes, was an American serial killer. His hotel in Chicago, built to cash in on the World’s Fair being held there in , was a rabbit’s warren of twisting halls and hidden rooms. The place was confusing at bet, total bewilderment at the worst. It has been compared to the Winchester Mansion, with doors and staircases that lead nowhere.

He had a chute running to the basement where he had lye, acid, and furnaces to dispose of the dead. He was known to supply corpses for dissecting rooms and skeletons for Doctors’ offices, and it was said these were bodies of his victims.

He was a scam artist supreme, and was wanted for various crimes in various states and Canada. When he gained control of his business associate BF Pitezel and his family, he sowed the seeds of his own destruction. Pitezel was to insure his life for $10, Then they would substitute a cadaver for Pitezel, collect the money and divide it.

Instead, Holmes murdered Pitezel and attempted to make it look accidental, and barring that, to make it seem suicida

H. H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil

America's first and most notorious serial killer and his diabolical killing spree during the World's Fair in Chicago, now updated with a new afterword discussing Holmes' exhumation on American Ripper.

H. H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil is the first truly comprehensive book examining the life and career of a murderer who has become one of America’s great supervillains. It reveals not only the true story but how the legend evolved, taking advantage of hundreds of primary sources that have never been examined before, including legal documents, letters, articles, and records that have been buried in archives for more than a century.

Though Holmes has become just as famous now as he was in , a deep analysis of contemporary materials makes very clear how much of the story as we know came from reporters who were nowhere near the action, a dangerously unqualified new police chief, and, not least, lies invented by Holmes himself.

Selzer has unearthed tons of stunning new data about Holmes, weaving together turn-of-the-century America, the killer’s background, and the wild cast of characters who ci

Holmes' Own Story by Herman W. Mudgett

"Holmes' Own Story" by Herman W. Mudgett is a chilling autobiographical account written in the late 19th century. This publication details the life and alleged crimes of Mudgett, who is more famously known as H.H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer, as he narrates the events surrounding numerous mysterious deaths and disappearances for which he has been implicated. The book serves as an attempt to vindicate his name against the media portrayals of him as a ruthless murderer. The opening of the narrative lays the groundwork for Mudgett's chilling confession, where he conveys his urgent need to clear his name amidst public vilification and legal troubles. He begins by recounting his early life in Gilmanton Academy, New Hampshire, and describing how seemingly innocuous experiences, such as encounters with a doctor’s office, kindled unusual interests in death and medicine. As he progresses through the narrative, he introduces key figures in his life, including the Pitezel family and Minnie Williams, leading up to their tragic ends. Mudgett’s compelling yet unsettling narrative provides insight into the mind of a man caught in a web
