新しい光ナノ構造「フォトニック結晶」の研究
フォトニック結晶とは、周期的な屈折率分布をもつ新しい光ナノ構造で、ある特定の波長域において、光の存在そのものを許さない光バンドギャップをもつことを特長とする。この結晶に対して人為的な欠陥導入や格子点の構造制御を行うことにより、光を極微小域で漏れなく直角に曲げたり、極微小点に光子を捕獲したり、さらには発光現象の完全制御を可能とするなど、自在な光子操作が可能になるものと期待される。本研究室では、このようなフォトニック結晶による自在な光の制御を目指す新しい学問領域"フォトニック結晶工学"を体系的かつ深く追求し、各種デバイスへの応用を図っていくことを目指している。

量子ナノ構造「量子ドット」に関する研究
量子ドットは、電子を３次元的に閉じ込め、その状態を究極的に制御可能なナノ構造体である。本研究室は、世界的に最も初期から、自己形成技術による量子ドット形成法を提案するとともに、その実証に成功した。現在は、(i)フォトニック結晶との融合による究極の電子・光子の制御を目指すとともに、(ii)局在したエネルギー間の遷移を利用したテラヘルツ応用に関する研究をも進めている。
