First Indian student () at the Ramdolph Macons’ Women College, Virginia (USA) and sponsored as an international student Sudharani Raghupathy majored in World History of Dance, studio arts, and the Martha Graham technique in Modern Dance.
Acclaimed as a ‘living legend’ Sudharani Raghupathy has been in the field of Bharatanatyam for more than five and a half decades. She has the rare distinction of having performed before the visiting dignitaries to India since and having given a command performance for Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Smt. Indira Gandhi (). On an invitation from the UN SECRETARY General Kurt Waldheim () she performed on the Human Rights Day at United Nations, New York. Sangeet Natak Academy has recorded her ‘Navasandhi’ Nritta (). Her dance-dramas – ‘Ramayana’, ‘Krishna Vande Jagat Gurum’, ‘Shakthi Prabhavam’, ‘Vande Guham Umasutham’, ‘Ekameva Nadvayam’, and ‘Shankara Loka Shanka’ among many others have been acclaimed world over.

The Speciality about the navasandhi Kavutuvams..
The Navasandhi Kavutuvams propitaiate the ashtadikpalaks(the guardian of the 8 directions) and Bramha at the centre. These were composed by the Tanjore quartette and performed during the Dwajaroha(Flag hoisting) festival at the Thanjavur Periya Kovil or the Brihadeeshwara temple. The Navansandi Kavutuvams are composed on Bramha, Indra, Agni, Yama, Niruthi,Varuna, Vayu, Kubera and Isana as suggested earlier. It is interesting to note that though the TQ were proficient in very many languages, they chose to write all these kavutuvams in Tamil (Including the mention of the Tamil Pann). Probably it was an attempt to carry the message to the layman and the vernacular of the area being Tamil.
All the 9 Kavutuvams talk of the attributes of the particular deity(their mount, their consorts, their kriya (loosely translated as responsibilities etc.). The kavutuvams also provide details of each deity, such as the mount (vahana), the preferred tala, the hastas used, the consort, etc and the raga( actually the Tamil pan- equivalent of raga), dance style and thalam associated with that deity.

The months of February and March have been hectic for Bharatanatyam dancers in Tamil Nadu, as they have been presenting their dance as an offering in the Siva temples before, on and after Sivaratri. In keeping with the fervour, we present two interesting articles on Siva-Nataraja by eminent personalities.
The first is an exposition of the symbolism and joyous dance of Siva-Nataraja who forms an integral part of Bharatanatyam – the dance form so closely intertwined with the Tamil country.
