As one of only two speakers who have also MC’d the Design Indaba Conference in its 23 year history, Lebo Mashile was right at home on the Artscape Theatre stage. Her talk was a beautiful build-up of the vibrancy she exuded between talks, sharing an energy with the theatre that was almost palpable.
It’s clear from the moment she steps on stage, that this is where she is most comfortable.
Mashile started her talk by painting a picture for the audience of the kind of life that informed much of her passions and career today.
The child of exiled parents, she was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in the United States, moved back to South Africa at 18 months, then back to the States as a toddler. One of her first and most vivid memories, she says, was returning to the States, to the strange whiteness of winter’s snow and the strange whiteness of its people. She finally returned to South Africa at age 16 and has been traversing the world since.
“Criss-crossing, jumping identities has been the story of my life,” she adds, but she could always find a reliable refuge in literature. To this day she cites her journals as her lifeline.

the stage adaptation of K. Sello Duiker’s The Quiet Violence of Dreams, as well as Ngyidansa, the stage adaptation of Pamela Nomvete’s autobiography by the same name. She also collaborated with renowned choreographer and founder of Moving into Dance Mophathong, Sylvia Glasser, on Threads, a fusion of contemporary dance and poetry. Mashile won the NOMA Award for Publishing in Africa in for her premier collection In A Ribbon of Rhythm (Oshun) which was also published in German by Wunderhorn. In she released Flying Above the Sky, her second book of poetry. Her writing has been referenced in academic journals, has appeared in literary journals as well as mainstream publications, and is taught in high schools and tertiary institutions across South Africa. As a recording artist, Mashile has two studio albums under her belt, Lebo Mashile Live! () and Moya ().

Mashile attended Wits University in Johannesburg, where she studied law and international relations. While living there, she discovered Johannesburg’s underground poetry scene and began to perform. To Mashile, art held deep potential for regenerative change in the wake of her country’s years of social struggles, so she changed course and determined to be a poet. She and fellow South African women poets Myesha Jenkins, Ntsiki Mazwai, and Napo Masheane founded Feela Sistah! Spoken Word Collective in Formed in response to the women’s shared frustration at their exclusion from male-run creative spaces, the group proved to be a space for creative growth for its members, and soon rose to national prominence. In , Mashile was nominated for the Daimler-Chrysler South Africa Poetry Award; that year also saw her debut as a film actress, in Terry George’s Hotel Rwanda, and her performance at the presidential inauguration of Thabo Mbeki.

Lebogang Mashile (July 2, ) is a South African actor, writer and performance poet. The daughter of exiled South African parents, she was born in the United States and returned to South Africa in the mids after the end of apartheid. She began the study of law and international relations at the University of the Witwatersrand but became more interested in the arts. With Myesha Jenkins, Ntsiki Mazwai and Napo Masheane, she founded the poetry group Feela Sistah.
