Kriste Lindenmeyer

Responding to a fast-changing culture, Kriste Lindenmeyer is laying the groundwork for Rutgers students to make their mark in a new digital and global world.
In only five years as Rutgers’ dean of arts and sciences, Lindenmeyer has established a Digital Studies Center, as well as designing a new certificate program in the emerging field. But most exciting, she says, is a new dual degree planned for next fall, where students can add a Digital Studies major to their traditional course of study.
“Just because people have a small computer in their hand 24/7 doesn’t mean they know the best way to use it in their careers or life. They need help knowing how to do that,” she says. “In higher education, the 21st century is a different place than any time in the past years. We believe in addition to learning ‘reading, writing and ’rithmetic,’ students now must also have digital literacy. We can’t stand still.”

SHCY Origins Project
The Origins Project is the start of an effort to create a digital archive about the history of the field of childhood, children, and youth history. The s fostered new fields of historical study examining the experiences of many groups generally overlooked by earlier scholarship. Part of this expansion included the history of children and childhood, but the field gained little traction over the next two decades. In the s, however, a heightened interest in the ways children and youth reflected and shaped the values of communities, societies, politics, and public policy throughout the world reached a critical mass. Focusing on children and childhood provided new perspectives on important historical questions as well exposing the experiences of societies’ youngest members. Dr. Kriste Lindenmeyer is a member of the Department of History at Rutgers&#;Camden. Her scholarship and teaching focus on American history with specializations in public policy, diversity, as well as childhood and youth. A first-generation college student, Dr. Lindenmeyer thinks it is important for her to share her story with today&#;s students. She dropped out of college after her junior year. Got married, started a family, and had a multi-year career in business. It was clear, however, that earning a college degree would be key to future success. She returned to the University of Cincinnati, finished a B.A., then an M.A., and a Ph.D. in American History. She strongly believes that completing college is a path to opportunity and a more fulfilling life.
Besides working at Rutgers, Dr. Lindenmeyer has held faculty positions at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Vanderbilt University; and Tennessee Technological University.
