"At age six, young Henry started helping his mother tend a small garden behind the family home. At age eight Henry was canvassing the neighborhood with a basket under each arm selling vegetables from the family garden door to door. By age nine he was growing, grinding, bottling and selling his own brand of horseradish sauce. At ten he was given a 3/4-acre garden of his own and had graduated to a wheelbarrow to deliver his vegetables. At twelve he was working 3 1/2 acres of garden using a horse and cart for his three-times-a-week deliveries to grocery stores in Pittsburgh."3
Despite his "green thumb," Henry J. Heinz's immigrant parents, John and Anna, wished for him to become a minister. At 14, they "plucked" the young upstart from the vegetable garden and enrolled him in the Allegheny Seminary. But, like a plant winding its way, he went against their dreams and dropped out. Later, he took bookkeeping classes at Duff's Business College in Pittsburgh, Pa., but his knack for gardening proved lifelong, and he continued growing and selling vegetables.

He was the quintessential entrepreneur. He was an irrepressible optimist, an expert in positive PR, the first global marketeer, and as a manufacturer and employer he consistently set new standards of excellence. He treated his employees - that he referred to as "the Heinz family" - to better conditions than they could have dreamed of at home: sparkling locker rooms with clean running water; roof gardens to relax and eat lunch in; freshly laundered clothes to wear everyday; weekly manicures for anyone handling food; dental care; a monthly newsletter; music recitals; social clubs; and, of course, the annual family-day picnic. By employing chemists, he is also credited with creating the "quality control department" and encouraged consumers to come and tour his factory. He married Sallie Young and was the father of 4-children.

May Henry J. Heinz. When Henry was very young, he helped his mother make and sell pickles. He sold homemade grated horseradish in clear glass jars so his customers could see that he was not cheating them by adding turnips or wood pulp to his product.
When he was 12, he had his own vegetable plot, which he tended with zeal and skill. Soon, he was selling both his grated horseradish and his surplus garden produce to the local greengrocer. By the time he graduated from high school, he had to hire workers to help him.
Henry went to a top-notch business college, financed completely from his vegetable sales. After he graduated, he joined the growing canned-goods food industry.
That business did well until a combination of bumper crops and bank failures resulted in bankruptcy. Henry then started the Heinz Food company, which eventually grew into a national company known for quality organic production, a family-type working atmosphere, health and other benefits for his workers, and innovative advertising.

Henry J. Heinz was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 11, As a child, he worked in the basement of his Pittsburgh home, helping his father grind spices for his mother's pickles. Everybody in town loved the pickles, and after they were canned, young Henry would take them around to buyers. He became particularly adept at grinding the horseradish, and his later fortune rose and fell with this powerful herb. To make a living, he worked in his father's brick-manufacturing firm, eventually becoming a partner in the business.
The call of pickles and other prepared foods was too great, and Heinz left brick making to return to grated horse-radish, one of his mother's most popular products.
