Papua New Guinean politician

Gary Juffa is a Papua New Guinea politician and Member of the 10th Parliament of Papua New Guinea. He founded the People's Movement for Change party, of which he is the sole Member of Parliament. He was first elected to the 9th Parliament of Papua New Guinea as the Governor of Oro Province (also known as Northern Province) in July [1]

Early life and education

Juffa has written of his childhood, where he accompanied his mother, who was a family planning coordinator, as she traveled around Papua New Guinea for employment.[2] He lived across the country and attended a number of schools, but spent a formative period of time in Kokoda with his grandparents.[3] He attended University of Papua New Guinea.

Juffa entered the public service, joining the PNG Customs Department. He rose through the ranks to become Commissioner of Customs.[4] He resigned in and ran successfully for Parliament as Governor of Oro Province in He was re-elected in

After the first elimination, incumbent Governor and People's Movement for Change (PMFC) Party Leader,, Gary Juffa is leading with 14, votes.

On the second placing is People's National Congress Party candidate Allen Mesa with 8, votes, and in a close third is Independent candidate Jean Eparo Parkop with 8, votes.

Another Independent candidate, John Warison is fourth with 6, votes and fifth is Walter Enuma, another Independent candidate with 4, votes.

The second elimination process is currently  underway.

Northern provincial member Gary Juffa has urged the PNG and Australian governments not to forget the “ongoing” sacrifices of the custodians of the Kokoda Trail, which was the scene of a deadly campaign during World War II.

He said his people are simple, peace-loving and do not ask for much, but that does not mean the two governments should ignore their living conditions while talking up the significance of the trail, which runs on their land.

“They are a kind, peaceful, self-sacrificing people, we talk about sacrifices, they continue to make sacrifices to this day,” Juffa said.

“When you walk the trail and you remarked at how difficult and challenging it is remember that you are going to go back to your comfortable and remarkable homes where services are easily accessible, but the Biage people, they live here, walk up and down this trail.

“They struggle to provide the services you and I take for granted and you may say ‘well governor it is your responsibility’.

“Yes but if you think about what is said here – MATESHIP- the mateship would about us considering what they are giving us- what can we do to assist them, they endure and they have the courage not to speak up against
