Vani Ganapathy
Vani Ganapathy (also spelt Vani Ganapati) is an Indian practitioner of Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form that originated in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. By far its foremost exponent in the recent times, she has played an integral part in its rise to international recognition. It was her mother who indoctrinated her to the dance form at the age of four. Under the tutelage of Guru T. A. Rajalakshmi, she learned the initial steps of her chosen craft and by the time she turned seven, she had already performed her “arangetram” (first public performance). In later years, she also trained under the likes of Mahalingam Pillai, Govindaraja Pillai and Kalyanasundaram. In the s, Ganapathy became involved with a program called ‘The Rich Heritage’, which was one of the flagship shows of Doordarshan in its early days. Around , she founded Sanchari, her own dance school. For her illustrious career and contribution to Indian art and culture, Ganapathy received the Excellence Award from then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MG Ramachandran.

Recipient of the Ananya Puraskara for , Kalasinchana is honoured to interview Vani Ganapathy, performer, teacher and artiste par excellence. With a journey spanning several art-filled decades, Vani offers us a glimpse into the making of the artiste and the personality.
Tell us about your entry into the world of Bharatanatyam.
Coming from a lineage of artistic individuals, art thrived in the eco system in which I grew up in. My beginnings in dance were in Kolkata. My mother was learning and performing at the time and she would take me along when she went to class. I picked up from there and began to learn too. Under the watchful eyes of Guru TA Rajalakshmi, within 3 years I did my Arangetram by the time I was 7.

My sister Meera joined too and we both debuted as a duo when she performed her Arangetram in Since then we performed as a duo for several years and were known popularly as Vani& Meera.

Vani Ganapathy is a Bharatanatyam exponent who began her training with T.A Rajalakshmi at Calcutta at the age of four and had her arangetram at the age of seven. Her move to Bombay brought her under the tutelage of gurus Mahalingam Pillai, Govindaraja Pillai and Kalyanasundaram. For many years Vani danced along with her sister Meera and the duet performances were well received in Bombay.
Vani moved to Chennai after marriage, and from , she began performing on her own establishing herself as a successful solo artiste. Besides performing extensively in India, she has performed in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Middle East, and China. A move to Bangalore saw her further career by establishing the dance institution ‘Sancari’ where she trains students in Bharatanatyam.
Vani Ganapathy is a talented artiste whose presence is seen in other fields related to art. In the mid - seventies she presented a TV series The Rich Heritage for Doordarshan on the four classical styles of dance in the Young World programme. It was Doordarshan’s entry at the Blue Danube Festival in Europe and was later telecast by BBC.
