The day Oklahoma buried Pretty Boy Floyd
Oklahoma farm boy turned legendary bank robber Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd was laid to rest in a tiny hilltop cemetery in Akins, about 10 miles northeast of Sallisaw, near the Arkansas border, 82 years ago this week.
It still is thought to be the largest funeral ever held in Oklahoma.
The Oct. 28, , rites for the slain gangster were, as The Daily Oklahoman then pointed out, “everything that a funeral ought not be.”
“Huge throng of curious is disorderly at rites for slain gunman,” a headline on the next day’s front-page noted. “Morbid thousands create barbaric atmosphere at cemetery.”
Dust clouds billowed as an unruly crowd, variously estimated to number anywhere between 10, and 40,, jammed roads leading to the rural cemetery, according to newspaper reports of the day.

Floyd soon recovered from his wounds and returned to the hills, where he hid out for a spell at his brother Bradley's home in Earlsboro. Back into the picture had come Juanita Baird, who had also recovered from her wounds suffered in Toledo. Along with her sister Rose, Juanita won an appeal in Ohio and the case against the Baird siblings was dropped. She and Choc became constant company again.
Ruby fumed, of course, but when she was told he had been hurt in the fight with Sheriff Kelley she faithfully rushed to his side. She stayed with him a few weeks. It was Juanita's turn to hide.
George Birdwell found this all too confusing and remarked that Choc might be better off if he'd quit chasing skirts to occupy his mind on business. This opened up an argument and the boys split. Actually, the men's relationship had been on the edge for some time; Birdwell was growing tired of Choc getting all the glory, while he was viewed pretty much as a tagalong.

Charles Arthur Floyd was born in Bartow County, Georgia in His family moved to Oklahoma in , and he grew up there. As a youth, he spent considerable time in nearby Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri. Floyd was first arrested at age 18 after he stole $ in coins from a local post office. Three years later he was arrested for a payroll robbery on September 16, in St. Louis, Missouri and was sentenced to five years in prison. He served three and a half years before gaining parole. When paroled, Floyd vowed that he would never see the inside of another prison. Entering into partnerships with more established criminals in the Kansas City underworld, he committed a series of bank robberies over the next several years; it was during this period that he acquired the nickname &#;Pretty Boy.&#; According to one account, when the payroll master targeted in a robbery described the three perpetrators to the police, he referred to Floyd as &#;a mere boy — a pretty boy with apple cheeks.&#; Like his contemporary Baby Face Nelson, Floyd hated his nickname.
