Cultural events, art fairs and well-known art galleries have shown a growing interest in contemporary African art over the past few years.

The artist Bright Ugochukwu Eke, born in in Mbaise (Imo State), Nigeria works with found objects and recycled materials (such as carelessly discarded plastic bottles) to create highly symbolic installations based on environmental pollution and ecological destruction. Eke’s preferred artistic medium is water, one of the four basic elements that were outlined by the earliest philosophers. It is the ultimate symbol of life and links all humans with their environment. Inspired by suffering from a skin infection triggered by acid rain while living in his home country of Nigeria, Eke created an installation called “Acid Rain,” which consists of numerous small plastic bags filled with acidified water, for the Dakar Biennial of Contemporary African Art in Senegal. When seen as a whole, the floating “poisoned raindrops” take on the appearance of a giant cloud.

BIOGRAPHY

Bright Eke’s medium is water, which links all humans and their environments. Inspired by a skin infection he developed from acid rain caused by oil companies’ pollution in his native Nigeria, Eke first created a large installation comprised of small plastic sachets filled with acidified water suspended like poisoned raindrops frozen midair.

The spatial complexity of his work entitled Acid Rain, first seen at the Dakar Biennial, evoked both our global connectedness as humans and the delicate natural networks in which we are all embedded. Bright Eke has extended this metaphor in the “waterways” he constructed from thousands of plastic water bottles. Such works as Natural Connection, installed for the International Festival for the Arts in the Netherlands, and Confluence, created for the international exhibition CodeShare in Lithuania, formed tunnels or labyrinths through which visitors moved, like amoebas in our intestines or fetuses in a birth canal.

Rivers and other bodies of waters can also constitute boundaries, and the politics of water is increasingly divisive as water becomes more precious. Several of Bright Eke’s

Heavy Clouds references the impact of human interference on the natural environment. The exploitation and over-dependence on natural resources and the production and consumption of toxic materials have continued to cause environmental harm and pollution.

Bright Eke's medium is water, which links all humans and their environments. He is captivated by water and its capacity to confront worldwide, human and environmental challenges. The artist delves into the historical and contemporary relevance of water to culture, society, politics and economics, examining its impact on both society and the physical environment.

Bright Eke obtained his MFA from the University of Nigeria, where he studied with El Anatsui. He has shown internationally, including in the exhibitions Environment & Object: Recent African Art at the Tang Museum, Skidmore College, and Global Africa Project at the Museum of Art & Design, New York.
